What Is Body for Life?

Body for Life is the diet and exercise program created by noted fitness guru Bill Phillips, and is based upon the premise that you’re more likely to stick with a diet and workout program if you see results quickly. His program is quite challenging as it involves training with weights for 45 minutes three days a week, alternating with aerobic exercise for at least 20 minutes three days a week.

On the dieting side, you are required to eat six small meals of healthy foods such as vegetables, brown rice, poultry, and fish each day ( a common theme in many diets these days) for six days a week. On the seventh day, you are free to eat anything you like and to take a day off from the rigorous workouts.

In the best-selling Body for Life book and on the website you will see some before-and-after photos of people who went from flab to fab – they really do look terrific. Their chiseled muscles and six packs in the “after” photos are in stark contrast to the “before” pictures that look, well, like most of us. But to be honest, don’t expect to look like the “after” pictures in just 12 weeks, workout intensity like this will produce both functional and a cosmetic results, but very few people would be able to attain these bodybuilder muscles just by following the basic program for 12 weeks. This would take more advanced training over a longer period.

However, if you can stick to the 12 week program, you will definitely achieve noticeable improvements in your weight and musculature.

Costs and Fees

The Body for Life book retails for around $20.00, although you can manage to get it cheaper from various resellers. There is also another book published by Bill Phillips, namely “Eating for Life“, plus the Body for Life website, which is free to join.

Diet Features

The Body for Life program requires you to eat six moderate-sized meals a day, with each meal consisting of a fist-sized portion of protein – lean mean, poultry, fish, egg whites, or cottage cheese — and a fist-sized portion of carbohydrates such as potatoes or brown rice. You must eat two portions of vegetables at a minimum, drink 10 glasses of water each day and round off your daily diet with a tablespoon or two of healthy oil (such as flaxseed).

Shakes (as meal replacements) and other nutritional supplements (manufactured by a company originally started by Bill Phillips) are also recommended (plugged), but not essential.

The diet breaks down to about 45% protein, the same for carbohydrates, and around 10% of fat.

Body for Life provides you with a list of authorized foods to choose from:

Worksheets are provided so that you can monitor your daily calorie intake.

Fitness Features

Many would consider that the primary focus of Body for Life is the exercise program which appears to be quite rigorous or intense.

You train with weights for no more than 46 minutes, 3 times a week – Monday, Wednesday and Friday and perform 20 minutes of aerobic exercise 3 times per week, first thing in the morning on an empty stomach on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.

You alternate the training of the major muscle groups from one day to the next and you perform 2 exercises for each major muscle group.

The majority of the weight training exercises can be performed with minimal equipment – a set of dumbbells and an adjustable dumbbell bench are all that would be required.

Once again, worksheets are provided for you to monitor your daily workouts.

Does Body for Life really work?

The foods allowed in the Body for Life program tend to be lower in calories than standard American fare, and by eating fist-sized portions, you should be consuming fewer calories, even if you are eating six meals a day. When you “graze” as opposed to eating large meals, you change how your body handles energy intake. When you eat a few large meals, you tend to use stored fat as energy when you “graze”; whereas eating many meals makes you more efficient and you tend to use the stored fat as energy.

Also, the intense weight lifting will increase your muscle mass, which will increase your metabolic rate for the entire day. So by exercising strenuously six days a week, you will certainly burn a lot more calories throughout the entire day.

Support

Community support is provided by way of the Body for Life website:

There are many variants on the Raw Food Diet, however, in this review we will be looking at the Raw Food Diet as outlined by Carol Alt in her book “Eating in the Raw“.

For many years, Alt’s lifestyle as a professional model took a heavy toll on her health and wellbeing, with her suffering various ailments including acid indigestion, headaches, sinus issues, and etc.

When Carol learned about the health benefits from consuming raw food she changed her approach to eating and hasn’t looked back since. Her stunning transformation not only included the elimination of her existing health problems, but she also found that she had more energy, looked better than before, and no longer had to worry about how much she ate – as long as she ate raw.

“Eating in the Raw” begins with her story and then presents practical, how-to information on everything you need to know about the exciting raw food movement that’s been embraced by celebrities such as Demi Moore, Pierce Brosnan, Sting, Edward Norton, and legions of other health-minded people. You will learn:

What exactly raw food is-and isn’t-and how to integrate it into your diet

How to avoid the all-or-nothing pitfall: you can eat some cooked foods, you can eat some foods partially cooked, and you don’t have to deprive yourself

Why raw food is not just for vegetarians or vegans-Carol eats meat, and so can you

The differences between cooked and raw vitamins, minerals, and enzymes, and what they mean for you

An ease-in approach to eating raw, and how to eat raw in restaurants

Eating in the Raw

Carol also answers frequently asked questions and offers forty simple recipes for every meal, from light dishes such as Gazpacho and Lentil Salad to entrees including Tuna Tartare and Spaghetti al Pesto and even desserts like Pumpkin Pie and Apple Tart with Crème Anglaise, rounding out a thorough, accessible, and eminently compelling case why raw is the best way to eat.

Since most of her recipes are from renowned raw food chefs and high profile celebrities, its a pretty good book for someone who likes to read about the Raw Food Diet and lifestyle world as well.

The fact that Carol advocates the eating of raw fish and other raw animal products, gives the entire raw-food movement a stamp of legitimacy (because they do have their place in a healing diet ).

Changing to a raw food diet: Transition to raw diet

Don’t make any radical changes based on this book alone as you may suffer detox shock! It’s important to transition slowly! But so few raw food books bother to mention that! Read this one if you want to find out what the raw food craze is all about, but make sure you read plenty more (such as Natalia Rose’s “The Raw Food Detox Diet“) and educate yourself before you jump right in. It emphasizes the importance of transitioning (so you don’t shock your system and make yourself sick), and the importance of combining food groups properly for best results.

Does the raw food diet work

Just because the Raw Food Diet worked for Carol Alt and others doesn’t necessarily mean it will work for everyone. When you consider that Alt’s previous diet consisted of an excessive intake of refined carbohydrates and alcohol, then it is no surprise that she experienced a tremendous change in her health as a result of switching to the Raw Food Diet.

While may people have reported remarkable improvements in health and vitality, the jury is still out to a certain extent with studies showing both positive and negative effects from the Raw Food Diet add to that the fact that many people find it difficult to maintain the Raw Food Diet as a lifestyle eating plan.

The Cabbage Soup Diet is a 7 day (only) meal plan, aimed at achieving fast weight loss and not a long-term weight loss solution. Rumour has it that it originally came from a hospital (Sacred Hearts Hospital) where it was used to stimulate weight loss in patients prior to surgery – but this has never been verified.

So, if eating a bottomless bowl of cabbage soup, together with a few other low-calorie foods, for a solid week appeals to you, then the Cabbage Soup Diet is sure to lead to quick weight loss.

Different versions of this restrictive diet have appeared over the years and a few books have been published documenting different variations of this simple, anonymously written diet plan. However, since the food choices are so limited and the calories so low, boredom – and inadequate nutrition – are inevitable.

Diet Features – What You Can Eat

The 7-day Cabbage Soup Diet plan promises you all you can eat – as long as you stick to the small list of allowed foods on alternate days, together with two daily bowls of fat-free cabbage soup. Dieters are also advised to drink plenty of water and avoid alcohol.

Here is a sample 7-day Cabbage Soup Diet plan:

Day 1: Cabbage soup plus all the fruit you want, except for bananas. Drink unsweetened tea, black coffee, cranberry juice, or water.

Day 2: Cabbage soup, plus all the low-calorie vegetables you want (except for beans, peas, or corn), and a baked potato with butter.

Day 3: Cabbage soup plus a mixture of the above fruit and vegetables.

Day 4: Cabbage soup plus up to eight bananas, and two glasses of skim milk.

Day 5: Cabbage soup plus up to 20 ounces of beef, chicken or fish, up to six fresh tomatoes, and at least 6-8 glasses of water.

Day 6: Cabbage soup plus up to 3 beef steaks, and unlimited vegetables.

Day 7: Cabbage soup plus up to 2 cups of brown rice, unsweetened fruit juices, and unlimited vegetables.

The recipes for the cabbage soup will vary slightly with the different versions of the diet available, but they are all based on cabbage and an assortment of low-calorie vegetables such as onions and tomatoes, and are flavored with onion soup mix, bouillon, and tomato juice.

Here’s a typical recipe:

1 packet dry onion soup mix

2 bouillon cubes – chicken or beef

1 celery stick (not the whole stalk) – diced

1/2 head green cabbage – diced

3 carrots – sliced

2 bell peppers – sliced

6 large green onions, or 1 large yellow, white or purple onion – diced

2 cans of tomatoes – diced or whole

Cooking spray

Salt, pepper, parsley, garlic powder, soy sauce to taste (or any other seasoning you like)

The New Cabbage Soup Diet

Margaret Danbrot. St. Martin’s Paperbacks 2004,

Mass Market Paperback, 208 pages,

 List Price: <s>$6.99</s>

Our Price: $3.00

Spray a large pot with cooking spray and saute all the vegetables (except for the cabbage and tomatoes) until tender. Add the cabbage and about 12 cups of water, toss in bouillon cubes, soup mix, and seasonings and cook the until soup reaches your desired tenderness; then add the tomatoes.

You are very likely to experience some gastrointestinal discomfort (especially wind) from the highly sulfurous cabbage and other gassy vegetables. Some people have also reported feeling lightheaded while on this plan.

The Cabbage Soup Diet plan is not individualized in any way individualized, and there are are no recommendations about exercise, behavioral tips, or advice on changing bad eating habits – just a strict list of what to eat each day of the week.

Does the Cabbage Soup Diet Work

The Cabbage Soup Diet plans promise a 10+ pound weight loss in one week, and you are restricted to one week at a time on the plan ( If you want to lose more weight, then you are advised to wait awhile before commencing another week on this super-low-calorie diet.). You may very well lose the promised 10+ pounds, but most of that weight loss will be primarily from fluids, not fat, and will most certainly return once you resume eating normally

The Cabbage Soup Diet is basically a modified fast, containing so few calories that dieters will definitely lose weight rapidly during the week-long plan. However, there is nothing magical or mystical about cabbage or cabbage soup that fosters the weight loss – it is simply the extremely low-calorie nature of the diet plan that does the trick.

Warning: Most experts agree that any diet under 1,200 calories per day is unsafe unless you’re under a doctor’s supervision, as it’s almost impossible to get all the nutrients you need and to satisfy your hunger in so few calories. Therefore, if you really do want to give this modified fast a try, please check with your doctor first.

The 5-Factor Diet was originally created for celebrities by Harley Pasternak. Harley’s challenge was to create brief (yet effective) workouts for actors to undertake during their short breaks on movie sets. He also needed to be able to create healthy meals in a matter of minutes, using simple ingredients (the fewer the better) that could fit in the mini fridge on a movie set.

He was also relying on simple kitchen appliances such as a blender and toaster oven for the mixing, blending, and cooking? Harley’s clients were eating five times a day, cutting the length of their workouts, and were able to transform their bodies! As the saying goes, necessity is the mother of invention.

The 5 Factor Diet was subsequently published in a book of the same name by celebrity trainer Harley Pasternak and has been used by stars such as Jessica Simpson, Mandy Moore, Eva Mendes, Alicia Keys, John Mayer, Kanye West, and more get their million-dollar bodies.

However, whenever you hear the words Diet and Hollywood in the same sentence, the first thing that comes to mind is “fad” or “gimmick – but is it unfair to label the 5 Factor Diet with the tag of being just another celebrity quick weight loss fix?

Let’s have a “look under the bonnet” and see if there is any real substance to the 5 Factor Diet and dispel any hoopla about it.

Membership

Membership starts from $5.00 per week.

Diet Features

What Exactly Is The 5 Factor Diet?
The “five” in the 5 Factor Diet really is the “operative factor” and comes not only from the number of components that each meal includes – a balanced mix of lean protein (like chicken, fish, or low-fat dairy); complex carbohydrates (like fruits and vegetables); fiber (like whole grains); healthy fats (like monounsaturated olive oil); and water or another sugar-free beverage – but also from the recommended five meals a day, with recipes that contain no more than five ingredients, and take no more than five minutes of preparation time and five minutes of cooking time.

The 5 Factor Diet

Harley Pasternak. Meredith Books 2006,

However, you are allowed a “cheat day” once a week, when you can eat anything you like. Harley believes that you shouldn’t feel like you are in a “diet jail” and that controlled cheating will actually help you reach your weight goals.

The emphasis is also on food choices that have a “low glycemic index.” The glycemic index is a method of rating foods according to their affect on blood sugar levels in the body after eating. Whether this makes a significant difference is open to debate, in the end, it’s just calories in and calories out that is importaqnt for weight loss.

A new study from Tufts University showed that what matters most in weight loss is reducing calories and that both foods high and low on the glycemic index have pretty much the same end result.

To summarise, the 5 Factor Diet ‘Fat-loss’ keys are:

Metabolism – increased metabolism burns more calories, hence less fat.

Exercise – stay in the fat-burning zone and build lean muscle.

Right calories – consume foods with the right kind and amount of calories.

Glycemic Index – low GI foods help maintain your blood sugar levels steady.

Rest and recovery – promotes the production of growth hormone for muscle condition, and reduced cortisol (’stress’ hormone).

Fitness Features

Naturally there is also a five-day exercise program, which – not surprisingly consists of five exercises that you do for 5 minutes each. Workout 25 minutes a day, 5 days a week for a period of 5 weeks.

The exercise is a combination of both cardio and strength training, and you don’t need any expensive equipment to do it – just a simple set of dumbbells would suffice.

The 5-Factor Diet website also provides the following support and weight loss tools:

Jillian’s program takes into account three factors — self, science, and sweat. Weight loss is a process that’s both mental and physical. There are no gimmicks or get-skinny-quick schemes here — we’re talking about fitness for life! You’re going to have to tackle three hurdles before you can finally get fit — you need to get support, eat right, and exercise!

Get tips from real people who have taken part in Jillian’s program and found major success. Whether they were aiming to lose 20 or 100 pounds, their experiences show that they have been in your shoes and know the ups and downs of finding a diet plan that works. Get inspired by their stories!

Jillian’s hand-picked experts write about physical and behavioral health, nutrition, beauty, and overall well-being. Check back regularly for more tips and advice that will help you look and feel your best!

Before you can do that, you have to let go of unreachable goals and replace them with real ones. Jillian will help you identify emotions that trigger bad behaviors like overeating, banish bad habits for good, and set up the support systems you need to succeed

Membership Fees

Currently just $4.00 per week (or around $17.33 per month)

Diet Features

You’ve seen Jillian on the Biggest Loser and now you’re ready to make a commitment to lose weight and get fit and you’re ready to go, right? Although exercise is the crucial (and the most obvious) component of Jillian’s program, it’s not the only piece of the puzzle.

But, it’s all so confusing! Low carb, low fat, high protein… It’s hard to know what to eat! Weight loss is all about “calories in” and “calories out.” Jillian will tell you how to calculate your calories, how to choose foods that will help you lose weight, and what to look for when shopping in your local grocery store.

With Jillian’s program, you will:

Discover the right foods for your body type and metabolism.

Find out how many calories you need to eat to lose weight successfully.

Learn how to put together delicious meals with recipes customized for your body type.

Get diet-friendly strategies for fine dining and fast-food restaurants.

Fitness Features

As we’ve said, weight loss is all about calories in and calories out. Exercise is the best way to get those calories “out” and finally burn fat. Exercise, of course, is the cornerstone of Jillian’s online program. You ready to get fit and kick some butt, right? Jillian is ready to help you!

Jillian’s online program features:

A weekly fitness planner based on your fitness level. For each exercise, we’ll tell you the muscles involved, how to start the exercise, and how to perform it, and offer training tips and progressions and variations for the exercise. This is a one-stop reference for all things exercise.

A anatomical guide that walks you through which muscles to work out, when and why.

Information about the best cardio exercises — which ones give you the most bang for your buck and burn the most calories!

120 Printable Exercises

You don’t need to be a contestant on the Biggest Loser! Jillian’s online program features tools that give you the support you need!
Fitness Planner
Get a weekly, customized schedule of your workouts. Each routine is based on your fitness level to help you reach your goals.

Fitness Diary
Write down everything — how you’re feeling physically and emotionally — and get inspired to work through your issues and toward your goals.

Support

As watching even one of Jillian’s team wins on the Biggest Loser demonstrates, weight loss is all about creating healthy habits. Before you can do that, you have to let go of unreachable goals and replace them with real ones. Your first step on the road to total health and your best life is simple: You can’t achieve success if you are not moving toward something, so before you do anything else, you have to establish a long-term goal. Sounds easy, right? Not so fast. It’s easy to say to yourself that you want to look like an action hero or a supermodel. It’s a little bit different to arrive at an ultimate goal that is at once ambitious and attainable.

Jillian’s program will help you:

Find your true shape. Want to look like a movie star? Forget it. Even movie stars don’t look like themselves after they’ve been styled and airbrushed. Jillian help you discover your true body type and what you can and can’t expect from it.

Establish healthy habits. Emotions often trigger the bad behaviors, like overeating. The key is to identify the things that are making you feel pressured, sad, angry, or anxious. Once you have identified your emotional triggers, you can break the cycle and start getting back in control of when, why, and how you eat.

Change attitude and change your life. A key element of changing your attitude is changing your negative self-talk. It’s this kind of useless negativity that is holding you back, keeping you from being the best you that you can be. Now is the time to turn it around once and for all.

Set up the support systems you need to succeed. She — along with hundreds of members of the online community — will be there to support you every step of the way!

Jillian’s online program features tools that give you the support you need!

Weight-Loss Buddies
Find support and advice from members just like you! Search for buddies who are your age, live in your area, or are at the same fitness level as you!
Message Boards
Looking for weight-loss advice or new recipes? Connect with Jillian’s online community — jump into the inspirational conversations.
